Krumm to Ft. Atkinson a few years after he arrived there on 29 Jun 1848. He was the second permanent settler in Winneshiek Co., and was Ruth’s great-grandfather. Gottlob, as he was called, was born in Neurtengen, Germany 6 Nov 1817. He died in Ft. Atkinson in 1892. His wife, Regina Barbara Fischer was born in Holzmaden, Germany 17 May 1819. She died 12 Aug 1905 in Ft. Atkinson. Their son, Christian Krumm was born 18 Oct 1845 in Neurtengen, Germany. He died in El Reno, OK in 1941. Christian married Lena Scheller in Ft. Atkinson. She was born 4 Dec 1851 in Switzerland and died in El Reno, OK in 1943. Lena’s father, Heinrich Scheller was born 11 Jun 1819 in Switzerland. His wife, Elizabeth Weiss, was born 6 Feb 1819 in Switzerland. They emigrated to the Ft. Atkinson area about 1850 and both are buried in Ft. Atkinson. Ruth's paternal great-grandparents Gottlob Krumm and Heinrich Scheller were involved in the founding and building of the Congregational stone church in Ft. Atkinson. Christian and Lena’s son, Louis George Krumm, was born 21 Jul 1873 in Ft. Atkinson and died 17 Jul 1955 in Decorah. He is buried in Burr Oak. Louis G. Krumm married Lydia Alice Slack in Hesper, IA on 10 Apr 1901. She was born in Ida Co., IA on 10 Feb 1879 and died 19 Dec 1987. She is buried in Burr Oak. L. Alice Slack’s father, Dr. Philip Slack was a medical doctor and also served several years in the 1890's and early 1900's as the minister at the Friends' Church in Hesper. Dr. Slack was born 5 Dec 1851 in Henry Co., IA. He died in the winter of 1923 and is buried in Keokuk, IA. He was the son of Daniel Slack who was born about 1820 in Canada. His mother was Rebecca Benedict born in 1824 in Quebec. Her parents were Isaac Benedict (b. 1794) and Rebecca Wing (b. 1798). Dr. Philip Slack's wife was Mary Ellen Page born 11 Sep 1853 in Galena, IL. She died in 1919 and is buried in Keokuk. Her father was Robert Arnold Page (b. 1815) who married Susan Meeker (1822-1907). Her grandfather was Jesse Page (b. 1788). His wife was Polly Arnold (b. 1792). Louis George and L. Alice (Slack) Krumm who farmed in Orleans and Burr Oak Twps. and later retired to Decorah in 1946, had five children. Helen (b. 1903) died in infancy and is buried in Cresco; Dora Louise Nash (20 Jan 1905-Sep 1942) is buried in Burr Oak; Kenneth Kermit (25 Oct 1911-Apr 1993) was a Luther College graduate and a World War II veteran; he is buried in Winona, MN; Ruth Krumm Price (b. 19 Mar 1919); and Roger Vincent (b. 1 Feb 1919) is a Luther college graduate and a World War II veteran; he lives in Gainsville, FL. The Krumm children attended Burr Oak #8 rural school and all four graduated from Decorah High School before the days of buses and free transportation — tribute to their parents who sacrificed much to educate their family. Ruth spent her first year of high school at Burr Oak, where one teacher taught all four subjects offered the 9th graders, and the final 3 years at Decorah High School, graduating in 1933. She attended Decorah College for Women 1933-34 on the Luther College campus and earned a B.A. degree from the University of Northern Iowa (then Iowa State Teachers College) in Cedar Falls, IA in 1940. She taught school in Burr Oak #1 (1934-36); Allison, IA (1937-39); Cherokee, IA (1940-42); Hammond, IN (1942-45) and in the Decorah Schools (1959-80). She started the string instrument program in the Decorah Schools in 1960. From 1951 to 1959, Ruth served on the Winneshiek Co. Board of Education, a period that saw the reorganization of the Winneshiek Co. Schools. Ruth married Daniel Arthur Price, a World War II veteran, 24 Nov 1945 in Burr Oak. They purchased the Burr Oak Twp farm which had belonged to Ruth’s parents since 1915 and lived there until the fall of 1994 when they moved to Decorah. Ruth and ’Art" are the parents of two sons. Both are Decorah High School graduates and Vietnam Conflict veterans. Daniel Roger, a graduate of Iowa State University, Ames, is a mechanical engineer, living in Waverly, IA. William B., a graduate of the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, is a programmer-analyst in Mission Viejo, CA. There are five grandchildren: Steven of St. Cloud, MN; Corey, Darcy, and Rebecca of Waverly, IA; and Nicole of Mission Viejo, CA. Price, Daniel and Nancy Price(William B. Price) Daniel Price, an early settler in Winneshiek Co., was born in Vestal Center, Broome Co., New York on 17 May 1832, the son of James and Lucy (Giffin) Price. James Price was born in Connecticut on 18 Sep 1794, the son of Daniel Price, Sr, a pioneer settler in Vestal Center. Lucy Giffin was born in Deering, Hillsboro Co, New Hampshire on 1 Nov 1801, the daughter of Robert and Betsy Giffin. Lucy died 8 Jul 1832, six weeks after giving birth to Daniel. James died 23 Apr 1845. Orphaned at the age of twelve, Daniel went to live with his bachelor uncle, Robert Giffin, who was living across the state line in neighboring Susquehanna Co, Pennsylvania. In 1855 Robert Giffin, three unmarried sisters, Lydia, Susan and Jane Giffin and nephew, Daniel Price, left Pennsylvania and moved to Iowa settling in Pleasant Twp, Winneshiek Co. On 3 May 1855 Robert Giffin purchased land in Sections 7 and 18 of Pleasant Twp. Here young Daniel Price farmed several years together with his uncle Robert, who also served in his community as Justice of the Peace. Four years after arriving in his new home, Daniel Price married a neighbor girl, Nancy Wise, the daughter of Samuel and Phoebe (Merriman) Wise. The marriage taking place in Elliota, MN on 24 Feb 1859. Nancy Wise was born in Pine Grove Twp, Venango Co., PA on 26 Nov 1835. Samuel and Phoebe Wise were also early pioneers in Winneshiek Co. arriving in 1856 and settling in Pleasant Twp, as had Daniel Price and the Giffins. Daniel and Nancy Price raised a family of eight children. most of whom were born in Pleasant Twp: James Sidney (b. 16 Apr 1860) married Mina J. Knowlton 31 Oct 1888; died in Decorah 9 Jan 1943.
